Jumbo, the Elephant was born in 1861 in French Sudan.  He died in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada on September 15, 1885 after being hit by a locomotive.

Jumbo was named by the zoo keepers at the London Zoo where he lived from 1865 to 1882, when he was sold to the Barnum & Bailey Circus.  Jumbo is likely a variation of the Shahili word jambo (hello) or jumbe (chief).

The word “jumbo,” meaning something very large, came into use from the elephant’s name.
