Iwo Jima Flag Raising

On February 23, 1945, after 4 days of fighting and with over 40%  casualities, the Marines raised the American Flag on Mount Suribachi.  Joe Rosenthal took this photo of the 5 Marines and 1 Navy corpsman.  The photo became one of the most notable and recognizable of the entire war.

The battle of Iwo Jima continued for another month.  The number of American casualties was greater than the total Allied casualties at Battle of Normandy on D-Day.
