Abraham Lincoln’s Bicentennial

February 12, 2009

Abraham Lincoln was born in Hardin County, Kentucky on February 12, 1809.  Today is the bicentennial of his birth.  For some reason, I didn’t understand that the Lincoln Penny was first issued on the centennial of his birth until I put two and two together the other day.  In honor of the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth, the reverse of the Lincoln Penny will feature 4 different images during 2009.

As a child I enjoyed reading biographies.  I had several on Abraham Lincoln.  I specifically remember one–I think it was published while Lincoln was still president.  It was a really old book with interesting pictures of Lincoln’s life.

In 1998, we took a family vacation that took us on a driving tour of the United States–over 7000 miles.  One of the high points was our visit to several Lincoln historical sites.  We visited his home and his tomb in Springfield, Illinois and the re-creation of Old Salem, Illinois–the town where his spent his formative young adult years.

Last year, Wendy and I visited the Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield.  By far, it was the best presidential library/museum we have seen.  It is very impressive and worth the visit.

I think Abraham Lincoln was our greatest president.  He served his entire presidency as a war-time president.  It wasn’t just a war–it was a war that tore our country apart.

Happy Birthday, President Lincoln.  Too bad they took your holiday away.  Of any president, you certainly deserve a holiday of your very own.
