Today is Western Monarch Day.  There are 2 distinct populations of monarch butterflies in North America.  The Eastern Monarchs winter in the mountains of Mexico and breed east of the Rocky Mountains.  The Western Monarchs winter along the California coast and breed west of the Rocky Mountains.

Western Monarchs like to winter in pine and eucalyptus trees along the coast. I have visited a couple of their wintering sites: one in Pismo Beach and one near Goleta.  It’s an interesting adventure.  Give it a try sometime.
