Thomas Alva Edison

Today is Thomas Edison’s birthday. He was born on February 11, 1847. As a young boy, I enjoyed reading biographies and Edison biographies were among my favorites. I was inspired by the stories of his adventures as a boy and of his creative spirit throughout his life.

Edison holds 1,093 U. S. patents, as well as patents from other countries. Here is a short list of some of his inventions:

  • Electrical vote recorder
  • Universal stock ticker
  • Automatic telegraph system
  • Duplex, quadruplex, sextuplex, and multiplex telegraph systems
  • Paraffin paper
  • Carbon rheostat
  • Electric pen used for the first mimeographs
  • Carbon telephone transmitter and microphone used in radio
  • Phonograph
  • Incandescent light
  • Motion picture camera
  • Fluoroscope
  • Fluorescent electric lamp
  • Nickel-iron-alkaline storage battery
  • Electric safety miner’s lamp

When you switch on a light today, or watch a movie, or use anything with a microphone, be sure to thank Thomas Edison and to wish him a happy birthday.
