Have We Forgotten?

It has been 6 years since the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York City and the Pentagon. Immediately following these attacks, we saw many posters claiming “United We Stand” and “We Will Never Forget.” American flags were seen everywhere. There was unusually unity shown in Congress between the both parties.

Not too long after 9/11, photos and video of the WTC attacks disappeared from television. In an attempt to be politically correct, everyone was subject to close screening at the airport–grey-haired grandmas and small children had the same chance to get pulled out of line as an young Arab man. Perhaps more of a chance. We don’t want anyone to think that we were profiling anybody. Not all Arabs are terrorists, but almost every terrorist is Arab. But that really doesn’t matter to the “security” people.

Today, the flags are gone. The country is far from united. Many don’t understand that there is a war on our cultural, our freedom, and our safety. Most of us go about our busy lives and we have forgotten.

On this sixth anniversary of the worst attack on American soil, let’s remember that what happened on September 11, 2001 wasn’t the first terrorist attack on America, it was just the most memorable. Let’s remember those police and firefighters who ran toward the WTC when everyone else was trying to run away. Let’s remember those in the military who work so hard to protect us. Let’s remember the families of the servicemen and women who didn’t come home from the Middle East alive.
